October 20 - Pumpkin Legend

Are you carving a jack-o’-lantern this year?

Did you know that the jack-o’-lantern dates back to medieval Ireland? Its legend involves an Irishman named Jack who was too stingy to go to heaven and too mischievous to go to hell.

Jack had to wander Earth until Judgment Day with a lantern made from a hollowed-out turnip with a live coal inside. Children started making these lanterns on Halloween; in the New World, people switched from turnips to pumpkins.

Tip: Besides pumpkins, try hollowing out turnips, squashes, or gourds.

Riddle: How do you fix a jack-o’-lantern?
Answer: A pumpkin patch!

October 13 - Sooner shakeup!

Residents of Oklahoma were jolted this morning by something entirely unexpected: an earthquake that struck the state around 9 a.m. local time, damaging several buildings, causing minor injuries and rattling people in five other states. The quake was centered five miles east-northeast of Noble and eight miles southeast of Norman. The U.S. Geological Survey originally categorized the quake at 4.3 magnitude, but the Oklahoma Geological Survey later came out with its own assessment of 5.1.
